Freeholder Candidate Tod Theise Claims Victory as Opponents Back Down on $30 Million Taj Mahal Library
Freeholders’ conveniently timed reconsideration of library boondoggle
validates candidate’s criticism and effectively endorses Theise’s run for Freeholder

Washington, NJ – Democratic Freeholder candidate Tod Theise of Washington Township declared a temporary victory today as the Warren County Freeholders back peddled on their proposed $30 million library/administrative building project.

Theise, who has made the lavish library the centerpiece of his Freeholder campaign, stated, “for the past several months I’ve warned my friends and neighbors about the Freeholders’ incredibly irresponsible scheme to stick taxpayers with an enormous tab for their Taj Mahal library. When I read Rick Gardner’s explanation as to why the Freeholders decided to reconsider the proposed project, my jaw dropped. His words were virtually identical to the argument I’ve been making to voters about why the library is wrong for Warren County.”

Theise, who readily admits his admiration for Gardner as a person continued, “as much as I like Rick, the last I heard from him he was boasting about the stack of letters he had received supporting the library project and enthusiastically backing this exercise in fiscal suicide. I’ve been hammering this issue home to voters. Regardless of party, everyone I’ve spoken with has been shocked not only by the fact that the Freeholders are promoting this boondoggle, but that they refused to even let taxpayers vote on it.”

The Freeholders’ refusal to let residents vote on the library is particularly troubling to Theise. “At a February 18, 2009 meeting, Assemblyman Mike Doherty asked the Freeholders to let taxpayers vote on this massive spending spree. The Freeholders responded by boasting about their tradition of ‘fiscal restraint’. One Freeholder actually bragged about what a ‘great job’ they do spending our money and said allowing taxpayers to speak by referendum didn’t really apply to them. Talk about arrogant!”
A longstanding fiscal conservative and former GOP official and regional candidate, Theise made it clear that his goal is to do what is best for Warren County rather than advance a partisan political agenda. “Mike is 100% right on this issue. I don’t care whether he’s a Republican or Democrat. Governing is about ideas, not labels. It’s about principle, not expedience. When I consider an idea, I don’t look to see if it has an (R) or a (D) next to it. I only care whether it puts the people of Warren County first.”

As for the timing of this apparent repentance, Theise explained, “I find the timing of this announcement rather convenient. It is beyond transparent that the Freeholders are trying to take the most important issue in this campaign off the table until the election is over. They felt the heat in the kitchen and chose to turn off the stove. If they think I’m going to back off even one inch, they are sadly mistaken. I will never back down as long as this misbegotten stimulus package threatens the prosperity of our families.”

Washington Boro Councilman John Valentine, who has been advising Theise during his campaign observed, “it’s amazing that Tod hasn’t even served a day on the Freeholder Board and already may have saved taxpayers millions of dollars. I can’t wait to see what he can do when he wins in November.”

Theise, who serves as a 1st Lieutenant in the New York Guard, said that he views his candidacy as another opportunity to honor his country. “This election presents a unique opportunity for Warren County taxpayers to voice their opinion on not only the library, but their outrage at being told by the Freeholders that they don’t have the right to decide how their money is spent. The right of self determination is at the heart of our American heritage. I am duty bound to do everything in my power to protect this right.”

Theise has created two web sites at which voters can find out more about his stands on various issues and his personal background. “The web sites are both informative and fun. I even worked my dog Mabel into the campaign. The sites are

“And,” he joked, “just so voters know I’m serious about saving their money as a Freeholder, both sites are completely free and cost our campaign nothing. Now that’s practicing what I preach!”
